2019 Mexico Grand Prix – Preview

It was a magnificent, but more importantly a morale-boosting performance from Valtteri Bottas to claim the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix, his third race victory of the season, and is now the only driver that can challenge Lewis Hamilton for the 2019 championship, which means for the first time in Formula One history, a team, which in this case is Mercedes, will win six-consecutive driver and constructor championships after Mercedes claimed their sixth-straight Constructors’ Championship at Suzuka!

However, with Ferrari showing fantastic speed over one lap, and Red Bull Racing-Honda normally very strong at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, there will be a lot of factors for Mercedes to deal with as we head into Round 18 of the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship, the 2019 Mexico Grand Prix.

Hamilton (338 points) leads the championship by 64 points over his Mercedes’ teammate Bottas (274 points), the only driver that can challenge Hamilton for the world championship, and this weekend, Hamilton can move to within one of Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world championships if (and please note that you must finish inside the Top 10 in the race to claim a point for setting the fastest lap):

1. Hamilton wins the race (with the fastest lap), and Bottas finishes fourth or lower.

2. Hamilton wins the race (without the fastest lap), and Bottas finishes fifth or lower (with or without the fastest lap).

3. Hamilton finishes 2nd (with or without the fastest lap), and Bottas finishes eighth or lower (without the fastest lap).

4. Hamilton finishes 2nd (without the fastest lap), and Bottas finishes ninth or lower (with or without the fastest lap).

5. Hamilton finishes 3rd (with the fastest lap), and Bottas finishes ninth or lower.

6. Hamilton finishes 3rd (without the fastest lap), and Bottas finishes 10th or lower (without the fastest lap).

However, you sense it is going to be uphill struggle for Hamilton and Mercedes this weekend given the challenges they have had in recent times at high altitude in Mexico, which could very well mean that the championship goes onto the Circuit of the Americas the week after the Mexico Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc (221 points) is third in the championship, and the best of the rest for Ferrari despite finishing the Japanese Grand Prix in seventh after fighting back through the field after colliding with Max Verstappen on the opening lap, forcing Leclerc to come into the pits to change his front wing.

Verstappen (212 points) is still fourth in the standings for Red Bull Racing-Honda despite having to retire from the race at Suzuka due to damage suffered to his car after the collision with Leclerc. Vettel (212 points) is now level on points with Verstappen for Ferrari after finishing second behind Bottas in Japan, but still trails Verstappen in the championship due to having more wins than Vettel (two wins to one).

Behind the Top Five in the world championship, Carlos Sainz Jr. (76 points) is sixth in the world championship for McLaren-Renault, followed by Pierre Gasly (75 points) and Alexander Albon (64 points) for Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda, who will be changing their name to Scuderia Alpha Tauri-Honda in 2020, and Red Bull Racing-Honda respectively, while Sergio Pérez (37 points) for Racing Point-BWT Mercedes and Lando Norris (35 points) for McLaren-Renault complete the Top 10 in the standings following the disqualifications of both Renault drivers (Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg) from the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix after both cars were found to have had illegal pre-set, automated brake bias system after a protest by Racing Point-BWT Mercedes.

Looking at the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes (612 points) have claimed their sixth-consecutive title, and have an unassailable 177-point lead over Ferrari (435 points), who have a 112-point lead over Red Bull Racing-Honda (323 points). Ferrari can claim second in the 2019 Constructors’ Championship this weekend if they outscore Red Bull Racing-Honda by 21 points or more.

Behind the Top Three, McLaren-Renault (111 points) have increased their grip on fourth, while Renault (68 points), after the disqualifications of both their cars from the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix, are slipping back into the clutches of Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda (62 points), and Racing Point-BWT Mercedes (58 points), with Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari (35 points) and Haas-Ferrari (28 points) in a battle for eighth, while Williams-Mercedes (one point) look set to remain in last barring a minor miracle in the last four races.

So, who will win the 2019 Mexico Grand Prix?

Mercedes have a poor recent record at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez due to the track characteristics in part, but more specifically the higher than usual altitude, which affects the usual cooling package of their car, meaning that they have to allow more air into the car to cool various components, including components within the power-unit, thus reducing the overall performance of the car.

With that being the case, I look towards both Ferrari and Red Bull Racing-Honda, and while Ferrari have shown a great upturn in form since the mid-season break generally, I am going to tip Max Verstappen to grab his third race victory of 2019, and place heavy pressure on Charles Leclerc in the battle for third in the world championship.

And, with that, the championship battle between Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will continue onto the United States!

2019 Japanese Grand Prix – Preview

Mercedes rebounded in Russia, a place which they have always won at, with Lewis Hamilton winning in Sochi for the fourth time, claiming his ninth race victory of the season in a Mercedes one-two finish.

However, with Ferrari once again showing great speed in Sochi, and Red Bull Racing-Honda wanting to perform well in Honda’s own backyard, the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, Round 17 of the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship, is going to be interesting!

Hamilton (322 points) leads the championship by 73 points over teammate Valtteri Bottas (249 points) after taking advantage of the mechanical issues for Sebastian Vettel, and getting lucky with the virtual safety car (which turned into a full safety car) to overtake Vettel’s Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to take his 82nd career victory, with Bottas also finishing ahead of Leclerc.

Bottas needs to win the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend you feel to keep his slim championship hopes alive.

Leclerc (215 points) for Ferrari, and Max Verstappen (212 points) for Red Bull Racing-Honda are still in mathematical contention for the world championship, but are likely to be knocked out of contention this weekend, but Leclerc will be looking to continue Ferrari’s general upturn in form, while Verstappen will be looking to show off the brand new Honda power-unit, and take victory at the home circuit of Honda, which would be the first win for a Honda-powered car in Japan since Gerhard Berger for McLaren-Honda in 1991.

Meanwhile, Vettel (194 points) is out of contention for the 2019 championship, but will be looking to rebound after losing power with his power-unit in Russia, and challenge Leclerc and Verstappen for third in the standings.

Behind the Top Five, Pierre Gasly (69 points) is sixth in the championship for Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda after starting the first 12 races of 2019 with Red Bull Racing-Honda, three points ahead of McLaren-Renault’s Carlos Sainz Jr. (66 points), with Alexander Albon (52 points) closing quickly in eighth since joining Red Bull Racing-Honda from Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda, ahead of Lando Norris (35 points), the teammate of Sainz, while Daniel Ricciardo (34 points) remains inside the Top 10, just ahead of his Renault teammate Nico Hülkenberg (34 points) based on finishing fourth ahead of Hülkenberg at the Italian Grand Prix.

Looking at the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes (571 points) lead by 162 points over Ferrari (409 points), and have a chance of clinching their sixth-straight Constructors’ Championship this weekend, which would equal Ferrari’s record for most consecutive Constructors’ Championships from 1999 to 2004 by out-scoring Ferrari by 14 points or more.

Red Bull Racing-Honda (311 points) have secured at worst third in the Constructors’ Championship, but are still a chance of claiming second, with McLaren-Renault (101 points) in a clear and comfortable fourth behind them.

Renault (68 points) are leading the battle for fifth ahead of Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda (55 points) and Racing Point-BWT Mercedes (52 points), with Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari (35 points) and Haas-Ferrari (28 points) battling for eighth, with Williams-Mercedes (one point) still in 10th and last.

So, who will win the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix?

The weekend looks set to be affected by adverse weather conditions, and while Suzuka not in the direct path of Typhoon Hagibis at the moment, Saturday in particular looks set to be wet, and there could be a chance that qualifying might have to be postponed until Sunday morning, but regardless of whether that happens or not, Sunday looks set to be fine and sunny at Suzuka.

So, in terms of my prediction, I think Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes will be the ones to beat as he searches for his sixth victory in Japan to equal Michael Schumacher’s record at the Japanese Grand Prix, and his fifth at Suzuka, but it is set to be a tight fight between the Top Three teams on the grid.

2019 Belgian Grand Prix – Preview

The long mid-season break is over, and the second half, or more accurately, the final nine races of the season is about to get underway as the Formula One grid heads to the historic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium for the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix, Round 13 of the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship, and there has been a big change at Red Bull Racing-Honda for the rest of the season.

Red Bull Racing-Honda have decided to drop Pierre Gasly (63 points), who is currently a distant sixth in the championship, back to Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda, and have promoted Alexander Albon (16 points), who is currently 15th in the standings, up to the main Red Bull team to partner Max Verstappen (181 points), who sits currently in third in the world championship behind the two Mercedes drivers in Lewis Hamilton (250 points), and Valtteri Bottas (188 points).

Verstappen arguably has been the best driver in 2019, and is the only non-Mercedes driver to win races (two) this season, and has been performing to a level that is out of this world, seemingly out-performing his car race in, race out in comparison to Gasly, so it is going to be interesting to see if Albon is freakishly good, like Verstappen is, or whether his performance level is similar to Gasly’s, or whether Albon’s level is somewhere in-between over the course of the final nine races of 2019.

Talking about Hamilton, it was an amazing performance by him, and his team at the Hungaroring to defeat Verstappen and Red Bull in what a blisteringly great performance by both Hamilton and Verstappen, with Hamilton taking his 81st career victory, and now has a 62 point lead ahead of his teammate Bottas, whose future is still up in the air as to whether he stays at Mercedes, or whether he will need to search for greener pastures for the 2020 season.

Meanwhile at Ferrari, it hasn’t been a good season for them so far after so much promise before the start of the season, but it hasn’t been returned in equal measure with Sebastian Vettel (156 points) and Charles Leclerc (132 points) fourth and fifth in the world championship with no wins, and only really performing on circuits that have allowed their straight-line speed to shine.

Ferrari will be looking to utilise that strength over the next two races in Belgium and Italy to hopefully get a race victory or two before the end of the season.

Behind the Top Six in the championship, Carlos Sainz Jr. (58 points) is just five points behind Gasly in seventh for McLaren-Renault, while Kimi Räikkönen (31 points) for Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari, Daniil Kvyat (27 points) for Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda, and Lando Norris (24 points) for McLaren-Renault complete the Top 10 in the standings.

In terms of the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes (438 points) leads by a dominant 150 points over Ferrari (288 points), while Red Bull Racing-Honda (244 points) are 44 points behind Ferrari in third.

Behind the Top Three, McLaren-Renault (82 points) look to have fourth position under lock and key, while Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda (43 points) and Renault (39 points) battling for fifth, with Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari (32 points), Racing Point-BWT Mercedes (31 points), and Haas-Ferrari (26 points) looking to join that battle before the end of the season, while Williams-Mercedes (one point) is last.

So, who is going to win the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix?

You feel that this is Ferrari’s best chance (or at least one of their best chances) to claim a race victory in 2019, and you feel like that they will be favourites to claim pole position this weekend, but throughout most of the 2019 season, Mercedes have generally had the best race pace out of the entire field on a consistent basis, so should at worst be on the podium, but I think Sebastian Vettel is the one to beat this weekend!

2019 Hungarian Grand Prix – Preview

It was a chaotic 2019 German Grand Prix in changeable conditions, Max Verstappen got his second race victory of the season, Sebastian Vettel finished second from 20th on the grid after technical issues in qualifying, Daniil Kvyat grabbed his third career podium in Formula One, and the second-ever podium for Scuderia Toro Rosso!

However, many others had shocking races, with five drivers, including Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas, crashing out of the race, a further two retiring due to mechanical issues, including Daniel Ricciardo, while Lewis Hamilton almost crashed out of the race, not once, but twice, as he managed to somehow finish ninth in what was one of his worst races in his career to extend his championship lead heading into the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix, Round 12 of the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Hamilton (225 points) leads the championship for Mercedes by 41 points over teammate Bottas (184 points) after what was his worst race result, excluding retirements, in his Formula One career since the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix after both Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi from Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari received 30-second time penalties after the German Grand Prix for infringements regarding the start, which they are going to appeal against, promoting Hamilton from 11th, which would have been his worst race result, excluding retirements, since the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix, where he finished 12th, to ninth.

Hamilton will be looking to bounce back this weekend at the Hungaroring, a place where he has won at six times (the most race wins at the Hungaroring), and will aiming to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of most pole positions in Hungary (seven).

Meanwhile, Bottas must be feeling quite awful after crashing out of the German Grand Prix from fourth position to miss out on a golden opportunity to close the championship deficit, and with his drive under scrutiny from some quarters, he desperately needs a win in Hungary this weekend.

Verstappen (162 points) is third in the world championship for Red Bull Racing-Honda after his seventh race victory in Formula One in what was arguably the best performance of his career to date, and while you don’t necessarily think he is in contention for the championship, he could certainly challenge Bottas for second!

Vettel (141 points) is fourth in the championship for Ferrari after his come from behind drive at his home race, while his teammate Leclerc (120 points) is in fifth in the standings after a race that was in some ways similar to Monaco earlier this season, a race to forget!

Behind the Top Five in the world championship, Verstappen’s teammate Pierre Gasly (55 points) remains sixth in the standings despite going out late in the German Grand Prix due to collision damage on Lap 62, while McLaren-Renault’s Carlos Sainz Jr. (48 points) closes up on Gasly in the championship after finishing in fifth.

Behind them, Kvyat (27 points) has moved up to eighth in the standings after his shock podium finish for Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda, ahead of Räikkönen (25 points) for Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari, while McLaren-Renault’s Lando Norris (22 points) and Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo (22 points) are tied on points for 10th in the world championship, with Norris ahead due to two sixth-place finishes in 2019 compared with Ricciardo’s one.

Looking at the Constructor’s Championship, Mercedes (409 points) still have a huge 148-point lead over Ferrari (261 points), while Red Bull Racing-Honda (217 points) close their deficit to Ferrari to 44 points.

Behind the Top Three, McLaren-Renault (70 points) consolidated their position as Formula One’s fourth-best team, while a huge fight is brewing for fifth in the championship between Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda (42 points), Renault (39 points), Racing Point-BWT Mercedes (31 points), Haas-Ferrari (26 points), and Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari (26 points), and at long last, Williams-Mercedes (one point) score their first point of 2019 thanks to a 10th-placed finish for the courageous Robert Kubica.

So, who is going to win the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Mercedes showed in Monaco earlier this year what type of car they have in low speed corners, and given that the Hungaroring is similar in nature in so many ways (without the walls so close of course), you feel that Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton are the ones to beat, but you cannot rule out Ferrari and Red Bull Racing-Honda giving Mercedes a run for their money!

 

 

2019 German Grand Prix – Preview

It was a record-breaking sixth British Grand Prix victory for Lewis Hamilton in front of his home crowd at Silverstone in what was a Mercedes one-two, while it was a race to forget for Sebastian Vettel, colliding into Max Verstappen in the braking zone to Vale (Turn 16), and then receiving a 10-second time penalty on his way to 16th.

And, with the form of Red Bull Racing-Honda starting to improve, Ferrari will be starting to feel the heat as they both attempt to chase down Hamilton and Mercedes at the 2019 German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring, Round 11 of the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship.

Hamilton (223 points) leads the championship by 39 points over his teammate Valtteri Bottas (184 points) after a dominant performance by Mercedes at Silverstone. Bottas grabbed pole position ahead of Hamilton, and led during the early stages of the race, despite Hamilton putting him under tremendous pressure, before pitting on Lap 16 for a new set of medium-compound tyres, giving Hamilton the lead, before a safety car four laps later gave Hamilton a “free” pit-stop, and a strategic advantage in that he was able to pit for a new set of hard-compound tyres, and go to the end of the race on that set, while Bottas had to pit again (since he hadn’t used at least two of the three available tyre compounds), and with Hamilton showing superior speed, the five-time world champion was able to cruise to victory.

This weekend in Germany, it is a must win for Bottas, given that Hamilton will be very hard to beat in Hungary in just over a weeks’ time, to remain a realistic hope of winning his first world championship.

Max Verstappen (136 points) is third in the world championship for Red Bull Racing-Honda after finishing the British Grand Prix in fifth after recovering from the collision with Vettel in the middle of the race, and remains ahead of the four-time world champion in Vettel (123 points), and his teammate at Ferrari in Charles Leclerc (120 points), who managed to claim third at Silverstone behind the two Mercedes.

Behind the Top Five in the championship, Verstappen’s teammate Pierre Gasly (55 points) is sixth after finishing fourth at the British Grand Prix, his best race finish since joining Red Bull at the start of 2019, while McLaren-Renault’s Carlos Sainz Jr. (38 points) is seventh in the standings, pulling away in the lead of the battle of the rest so to speak, ahead of Kimi Räikkönen (25 points) of Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari, his teammate at McLaren-Renault Lando Norris (22 points), who is ahead of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo (22 points) based on two sixth-place finishes compared with one, to complete the Top 10.

Looking at the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes (407 points) have extended their lead over Ferrari (243 points) to 163 points, with Red Bull Racing-Honda (191 points) closing to within 52 points of Ferrari. Behind the Top Three, McLaren-Renault (60 points) continue to pull away from Renault (39 points), who likewise continue to pull away from Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari (26 points), while we have a great battle for seventh between Racing Point-BWT Mercedes (19 points), Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda (19 points), and Haas-Ferrari (16 points), with Williams-Mercedes (zero points) sadly behind this battle, and last in the Constructor’s Championship.

So, who is going to win the 2019 German Grand Prix?

Mercedes are the favourites, but it is going to be an absolute scorcher at the Hockenheimring, with maximum temperatures set to be around 34 to 39 degrees Celsius, at least on Friday, if not on Saturday as well, which will bring both Ferrari and Red Bull Racing-Honda back into the discussion, but as I currently write this preview, there is set to be rain on Saturday and on Sunday, with the temperature set to drop to around 25-26 degrees Celsius for Sunday.

It is set to be an exciting weekend, and perhaps one of the races of the season, and with a point to prove, especially after the last three races since Canada, and after crashing out of the lead in the German Grand Prix last year, I predict Sebastian Vettel will get Ferrari’s first race win of 2019, and his first race victory since the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix.

2019 British Grand Prix – Preview

Mercedes winning start to 2019 came to an end at the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, and it was a phenomenal performance by Max Verstappen, overcoming a poor start to come back through the field to claim an exhilarating victory for Red Bull Racing-Honda, the sixth of his career, and is the best-placed driver behind the two Mercedes in the standings heading into Round 10 of the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship, the 2019 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Lewis Hamilton (197 points) remains the leader of the championship by 31 points over his teammate Valtteri Bottas (166 points) despite his worst result of the season, finishing fifth, 22.805 seconds behind race winner Verstappen, at a circuit Mercedes expected they would struggle at, but will be looking to bounce back quickly at his home race this weekend, a race which he has won five times (2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), and if Hamilton wins this weekend, he will become the first driver to win the British Grand Prix six times!

While for Bottas, he needs to win this weekend to really start asserting some serious pressure onto Hamilton as far as the world championship is concerned as he hasn’t won since Round Four in Azerbaijan, and if the general trend continues, you feel like his chances of winning his first world championship will start slipping away.

Verstappen (126 points) is third in the championship after his first race victory of the season, defeating Charles Leclerc in the final laps after being behind his teammate Pierre Gasly in the initial laps of the races, who Verstappen later lapped in what was arguably the drive of 2019 so far, and will surely have opportunities for another win or two as the season progresses.

Sebastian Vettel (123 points) is fourth in the world championship for Ferrari, narrowly behind Verstappen after experiencing some mechanical issues in qualifying at the Red Bull Ring, forcing him not to take part in Q3, and costing him the opportunity to grab pole position, and maybe control the race in Austria in what was Ferrari’s best chance to take victory since the missed opportunities in Canada and Bahrain.

Vettel’s teammate Leclerc (105 points) is in fifth in the championship after finishing second at the Red Bull Ring, being passed by Verstappen in the final laps to narrowly miss out on what would have been his first race victory in Formula One. Surely, his time to convert is near, but I am not sure if it will be this weekend.

Behind the dominant Top Five in the standings, Verstappen’s teammate Gasly (43 points) is sixth after another disappointing performance in Austria, and really needs to improve if he wants to be competitive with his teammate at the back-end of the season.

Carlos Sainz Jr. (30 points) is seventh in the championship for McLaren-Renault, ahead of teammate Lando Norris (22 points), and Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen (21 points) after all three scored points at the Red Bull Ring, while Daniel Ricciardo (16 points) remains inside the Top 10 in the world championship despite finishing 12th at the Austrian Grand Prix in his struggling Renault.

In terms of the Constructor’s Championship, Mercedes (363 points) still dominate Ferrari (228 points) to the tune of 135 points, while Red Bull Racing-Honda (169 points) remain in a lonely third. However, it is a tighter battle behind, although McLaren-Renault (52 points) are pulling away from Renault (32 points) in the battle for fourth, but it looks set to be a colossal battle for sixth between Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari (22 points), Racing Point-BWT Mercedes (19 points), Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda (17 points), and Haas-Ferrari (16 points), while Williams-Mercedes (zero points) continue to struggle in 2019.

So, who is going to win the 2019 British Grand Prix?

We all know that Silverstone is a really fast, exciting, traditional race track, and while there are some straights and flat out sections that should suit the Ferrari, I think there are more than enough corners to give Mercedes the advantage, and with that, I think Lewis Hamilton will claim the British Grand Prix for a record sixth time, and for the fifth time in the last six years, but I think Ferrari could potentially give him and Mercedes a run for their money!

2019 Monaco Grand Prix – Preview

Another race, another dominant performance from Mercedes, and a fifth-straight one-two finish with Lewis Hamilton finishing ahead of Valtteri Bottas after beating him off the line from second on the grid, while Ferrari continue to underperform in contrast to expectations prior to the season, and would need a massive change in fortune to get on terms with Mercedes when Round Six of the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship gets underway from the iconic streets of Monaco.

However, before I move into more of the preview, I would like to pay tribute to former three-time world champion Niki Lauda, who has sadly passed away at the age of 70. Lauda was quite simply a Formula One legend, winning the world championship with Ferrari in 1975 and 1977, and one with McLaren in 1984, claiming 25 wins, 54 podiums, 24 pole positions, and 24 fastest laps across a 177 (171 starts) race career.

However, Lauda was also amazing in his entrepreneurial pursuits in the aviation industry in particular, but came back to work in Formula One later in his life, being employed as a consultant for Ferrari in the 1990s, and was the team principal of Jaguar from 2001 to 2002, but most successfully as non-executive chairman of Mercedes since September 2012, and played a huge role in the signing of Lewis Hamilton, and as they say in the classics, the rest is history! It was a life well lived, a winner, a fighter, a legend! The great Niki Lauda! Rest In Peace!

Looking ahead to the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton (112 points) leads the championship by seven points over his teammate Bottas (105 points) after his third race victory of the season, and the 76th win of his career. Hamilton will be looking to win the Monaco Grand Prix for the third time in tribute to the man who helped get him to Mercedes, while Bottas will be looking to bounce back after finishing second in Spain, and continue his sublime qualifying form, having taken pole position in each of the last three races.

Max Verstappen (66 points) is a distant third in the world championship for Red Bull Racing-Honda, 46 points behind the five-time world champion Hamilton, while Ferrari continue to struggle in contrast to their expectations with Sebastian Vettel (64 points) and Charles Leclerc (57 points) 48 and 55 points behind Hamilton respectively after the opening five races, and face an uphill battle to get somewhat back into contention for race wins, and the championship against the might of Mercedes.

However, the top five currently in the standings have finished inside the top five in each of the opening five races of 2019, and have pulled away from the rest of the grid, with Pierre Gasly (21 points), the teammate of Verstappen, now 36 points behind Leclerc in sixth in the world championship after a disappointing start to his time at Red Bull Racing-Honda.

Behind the top six in the championship, Kevin Magnussen (14 points) is seventh for  Haas-Ferrari, ahead of Sergio Pérez (13 points) for Racing Point-BWT Mercedes, while Kimi Räikkönen (13 points), and Lando Norris (12 points) complete the Top 10 in the standings for Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari, and McLaren-Renault respectively.

However, beyond the Top 10 in the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship, we find last year’s Monaco Grand Prix winner in Daniel Ricciardo (six points) in 12th position in the standings for his new team Renault after just one points-scoring finish, which was back in the third race of the season in China, the 1000th race in Formula One history, wearing the Jack Brabham tribute helmet, but have largely struggled for speed, and have struggled to be regularly inside the Top 10.

So, how do I think Ricciardo is going to go in Monaco?

I think it is going to be tough for Ricciardo to win for a second-straight year on the streets of the principality, but I think he will be in the thick of things for a high points-scoring finish!

Looking at the Constructors Championship, Mercedes (217 points) lead by 96 points over Ferrari (121 points), with Red Bull Racing-Honda (87 points) in a comfortable third. Then in the battle of the rest, McLaren-Renault (22 points) is fourth ahead of Racing Point-BWT Mercedes (17 points), Haas-Ferrari (15 points), Alfa Romeo Racing-Ferrari (13 points), Renault (12 points), and Scuderia Toro Rosso-Honda (six points), with Williams-Mercedes (zero points) sadly at the back of the field, and looking unlikely to score points anytime soon!

So, who is going to win the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix?

I feel like Mercedes have the strongest car to tackle the slow and tight corners around the streets of Monaco, ahead of Red Bull Racing-Honda, while the understeer balance in the Ferrari will hurt them this weekend, and certain teams, in particular Renault, will move up closer to the three front-running teams.

So with that, I am tipping Lewis Hamilton will win the Monaco Grand Prix for the third time, with Valtteri Bottas coming home in second, while Max Verstappen will grab his first Monaco podium in Formula One ahead of the amazing Daniel Ricciardo in a brilliant fourth!
