2018 Victoria Derby Day – Preview

It is one of the biggest days in Australian racing. Four Group 1 races, two Group 2 races, three Group 3 races, and a day which quite often (as it has done in the past) shaped the field for the Melbourne Cup, and the first Tuesday in November.

It is Victoria Derby Day of course, and the favourite for the 2018 Victoria Derby in Thinkin’ Big, who is the only horse in the Derby that has been placed in each of his starts (four wins from six starts, with two thirds), and has not currently passed the first ballot clause for the 2018 Melbourne Cup can force his way into the Cup with a win in the Victoria Derby.

However, most of the focus as far as the first Tuesday in November is concerned is the Lexus Stakes, with nine of the 11 horses in the ballot for the 2018 Melbourne Cup, with all nine needing a win to guarantee their place in the race that stops a nation, and quite often stops the world.

After a magnificent Tuesday, where Rekindling won the 2017 Melbourne Cup, which was the sixth Melbourne Cup success for owner Lloyd Williams, who incidentally quinelled the race, the second for jockey Corey Brown, who of course won on Shocking back in 2009, but the first for trainer Joseph O’Brien, who defeated Aidan’s (his father’s) horse Johannes Vermeer in a great battle in the last 200 metres in what was a Cup to remember, it is time to look ahead to another big day on Thursday!

And, the main race on Thursday is the Kennedy Oaks for the three-year old fillies, where Aloisia is the heavy favourite, but will be facing strong competition from the likes of Luvaluva and Pinot.

2017 Melbourne Cup – Preview

It is the race that stops a nation! It is a race that captivates the world! It is the Emirates Melbourne Cup, and the 2017 edition of the race promises to be another epic!

Can Almandin become the first horse to win back-to-back Melbourne Cups since Makybe Diva won three Cups in a row (2003, 2004, 2005) as he attempts to become the first eight-year old to win the great race since Catalogue in 1938, and only the third one in history?

Joining Almandin in the quest to become just the third horse to win the Melbourne Cup as an eight-year old are Max Dynamite, and Thomas Hobson, who are both looking to win the race first-up in Australia this preparation. Of course, Max Dynamite finished second in 2015, but is he going as well as he was back then?

Others trying to win first-up in Australia in this preparation include Tiberian, Red Cardinal, Us Army Ranger, Nakeeta, and Rekindling, with these five along with Max Dynamite and Thomas Hobson looking to become to first horse to win the Melbourne Cup first-up in Australia since Vintage Crop in 1993, with 97 international runners attempting and failing to win the Melbourne Cup first-up in Australia since then.

However, someone who could create an even greater piece of history is Wicklow Brave, who is looking to become the first nine-year old to win the Melbourne Cup.

But there are others wanting to shine on the first Tuesday in November.

Can Hartnell win the Cup after finishing third last year? Can Humidor back up its sensational second-place behind Winx in the W.S. Cox Plate and win the Melbourne Cup? Can Marmelo back up its solid sixth-place finish in the Caulfield Cup, and live up to the tag of being race favourite?

Can Bondi Beach defy its lack of running and poor form to create a huge surprise? Can Ventura Storm bounce back after a tough Caulfield Cup, and return to the form it showed in the Turnbull, where it ran second to Winx, and ahead of Humidor? Can Big Duke challenge for the Melbourne Cup after finishing fourth in the Moonee Valley Cup?

Can Boom Time create another shock, and become the first horse since Ethereal in 2001 to win the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double? Can Gallante turn around its poor form to be great as the rank outsider? Can Libran back up its second-place in the Moonee Valley Cup?

Can Single Gaze or Amelie’s Star become the first mare to win the Cup since Makybe Diva won her third in 2005? Can Wall of Fire continue its great form after finishing second in the Herbert Power, and can Cismontane continue its strong form to give Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott success in the Cup.

Here are my tips for the 2017 Melbourne Cup. (Please note, I will updated this post in the lead-up to the race).

My judgement/view

Hartnell comes into the 2017 Melbourne Cup in underrated form having placed in three of its last four starts during the last six months, but its run in the Caulfield Stakes (9th) has really turned many people off him. Outside chance.

My judgement/view

Almandin has been in strong form since returning this preparation, winning the JRA Trophy before finishing fourth in the Bart Cummings. I sense Robert Hickmott has been preparing Almandin with the sole focus of being at his best here. Strong chance.

Tiberian has been in great form in France, winning three of its last four starts in the last six months, including its last two, and horses bred and trained have had good success in the Melbourne Cup in previous years. Definitely not without a hope.

My judgement/view

Max Dynamite has only had two runs since the 2016 Gold Cup, including one over the hurdles, but won its only start on the flat in an handicap at Killarney back in August. Outside hope.

My judgement/view

Wicklow Brave has been in solid form in Europe, but struggled first-up in Australia in the Caulfield Cup as it attempts to become the first nine-year old to win the Melbourne Cup in the history of the race. Unlikely.

Big Duke is rated an outsider by many, but I think he is a strong chance, due to its consistent form, and its strong record in big handicap and staying races. Strong chance.

Record in Handicap/Quality/Set Weights+Penalties Group One staying races (2000 metres or more): 2-1-0-0

My judgement/view

Boom Time of course won the Caulfield Cup in a shock, but hasn’t really challenged for wins before this success, and I don’t think it can back up its Caulfield Cup success. Pass.

Record in Handicap/Quality/Set Weights+Penalties Group One staying races (2000 metres or more): 2-1-0-0

My judgement/view

Gallante is the rank outsider, and it has struggled in both of its starts since last year’s Melbourne Cup. Possibly in better form than what it looks, but I don’t think it can challenge. Pass.

My judgement/view

Amelie’s Star has been inconsistent, decent in the Naturalism, strong in the Bart Cummings, poor in the Caulfield Cup. Can’t trust, and I am happy to pass on this one!

Cismontane won the Lexus Stakes on Saturday to get into the field, and has placed in its last three starts. A strong chance.
